In the beginning of the 16 century the island was given by Spain to the Knights of St. John. Combined their fortifications with the vertical cliffs all around the shore, they made this islands a perfect fortress. Their reign ended when Malta was conquered by Napoleon, who was shortly defeated by the British Empire. Malta won its independence in 1964 and total freedom from British rule in 1979.
